A New Addition to Year 1-4!
During the summer, a member of staff, Mrs Jean McConnell, kindly purchased a teddy for Year 1-4 pupils. She knitted him a school jumper, complete with badge, so that he would feel part of our school. Charlie Bear went home with a different pupil each weekend, so in ‘Talking and Listening’ class, the pupils could retell his weekend adventures.
Then, we created a wall display of Charlie Bear’s adventures. Pupils wrote postcards about Charlie Bear’s weekend from his perspective. We printed photographs of all his activities – driving a rally car and a tractor, attending a wedding and a Frozen orchestral concert, meeting family members, baking buns, building with Lego, playing in the park, feeding Christmas turkeys, and lots more!
Thank you to everyone who welcomed Charlie into their homes and spoiled him with TLC!

Trip to Library
On Friday 27th March, after our annual Easter Egg Hunt, the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 pupils visited Kilkeel Library. As well as linking of the ‘recount’ topic in Talking and Listening, this trip was planned to make pupils aware of the library facilities and to foster a greater love of books.
We were kindly welcomed by the branch manager, Mr Gary McCullough. He gave a guided tour of the new facilities, allowing pupils to explore. The highlight for many was writing and drawing on the interactive whiteboard.
Then, while pupils settled on comfy cushions, he read a Bible story about Nehemiah and, later, another story – ‘Down the back of the chair’. They loved the rhyme, sibilance, alliteration and humour!
Before leaving, pupils gave the manager a ‘Hungry Caterpillar’ card, handmade by a Year 3 pupil, as a thank you.

Teddy Bears’ Sleepover
The teddies of our Year 1-4 pupils had a Sleepover in the classroom on Tuesday night. While the pupils were at home, their teddies were climbing on top of the bookshelves, sitting beside each other to read, etc. They even got into lots of mischief – even sneaking biscuits out of the staff’s jar for a midnight feast! We think they slept. . . eventually! However, by the time began on Wednesday morning, they were playing a game of ‘Hide and Seek’ and pupils had to find their teddies, who were in lots of different positions.
This activity was to reinforce positional words – on top, over, under, beside, between, etc – linked to Year 1’s reading book.

World Book Day 2015!
YEARS 1-4
On World Book Day, Anne of Green Gables and Maid Marian welcomed lots of book characters to their celebrations. Each character retold his/her story using a book or props. There were roses, suitcases, baskets – and even Paddington’s marmalade sandwiches to sample!
Then, they had surprise visitors! Two newborn lambs were brought in by a pupil’s Mum for a cuddle and a little bottle-feed.
Later, Years 3+4 acted out their fractured fairy-tale play, ‘Beauty and the Beast’, using dramatic voices, etc. as they had been taught in ‘Talking and Listening.’ Pupils then engaged in creative activities: designing a national book token for a World Book Day Competition and decorating Frozen buns.
After, pupils wrote about their “bullseye”/favourite activity of the day on arrows, to stick to Marian’s target. The special day ended with Maid Marian giving each pupil chocolate coins in a ‘Medieval purse’.
YEARS 5-7
I was Charlie from ‘Charlie and the chocolate factory’. I printed a golden ticket from the internet and stuck it on a chocolate bar. I read the book about two years ago.
I was Oliver from ‘Oliver Twist’. In the afternoon we dressed up and got a snack at the end.
I was Princess Kate of Cambridge. I chose her because she is famous and I have the clothes that she would wear. I had a mask that every one thought was scary! My favourite part was talking about ‘myself’.
I was Spider-Man on World Book Day. It was fun! My favourite part was showing every body who I was. At the end we got to eat some food and then we went home in our costumes.
I dressed up as Mandie Shaw for World Book Day. Mandie books are my favourite books because Mandie and Celia are always solving mysteries. I also liked listening to other people talking about themselves. I didn’t like getting my photo taken though!
I was Mariella. I brought a book called ‘Mariella Mystery Investigates A Cupcake Conundrum’. I also brought my cooking set and a chocolate cupcake. The best part of the day was seeing every ones costumes. The book was about a girl called Mariella. She has to make a normal cupcake (that was the chocolate one) but also a mystery one.
I dressed up as Heidi because I could not think of anything else! I wore pink shoes and a dress and shirt. In my story, I didn’t think that grandpa wanted me there and I did not want to stay but after a while I wanted to stay.

Fireman Visit
In March, Year 5 pupils enjoyed a visit from a fireman, who talked about hazards and fire safety in the home. After, they participated in a question and answer session.
Each pupil received a fire safety pack with games, information leaflets and worksheets. To thank the fireman for his visit, the class presented him with a handmade card to show their appreciation.
